SSR-1 by 11/acc: solid rocket, small payload delivery at Mach one
11/acc builds SSR-1, an 800 mm RC rocket glider with five staged motors in the tail, a drop-away payload pod on an N52 magnet seat, a printed LW-ASA wing and a hinged launch pad with a magnetic strip rail.

Key features
FS is fuselage station: millimetres aft of the nose tip. Neutral point from a vortex-lattice model. Masses are a first pass: the tail motors need ≈165 g of nose weight to keep the CG on FS 455.

Drop pod
A printed PA12 pod, 36 mm across and about 344 mm long, that carries the payload bay on the pylon with its CG on FS 455. Thrust from the tail motors seats it on an N52 magnet spigot; how it lets go is still to be chosen.

The magnet seat was set to 300–500 g pull for the old pod; it and the chute get re-set for this heavier one.
Separation
- 01
BOOST
Thrust from the tail motors presses the pod onto its magnet spigot.
- 02
COAST
The N52 magnet seat holds the pod.
- 03
RELEASE
The pod lets go. How is still to be chosen.
- 04
RECOVER
The pod and its inert payload come down under a chute. SSR-1 flies home.

03
Payload bay
Drawn to carry an inert payload 32 mm wide and 186 mm long (1.26 × 7.32 in, up to 185 g) inside the streamlined 36 mm pod: an ogive nose, a straight body and a tail that closes to a point, now that the motors sit in the glider's tail. It keeps the added drag low and still comes down under a chute.

Staged propulsion
Five motors in the tail instead of one. They fire in stages, and the pilot flips a switch for each one.

Phases
01A1 + A2
LIFT
The lower pair fires together and lifts SSR-1 off the pad.
02NONE
COAST
Nothing burns. The wing carries it.
03NONE
TURN
The pilot banks it around with the elevons.
04B1 + B2
SECOND LIFT
The upper pair lights in the air for a second climb.
05C
RETURN
The center motor gives one last push toward home, then it glides in.
- A · LIFT
- B · SECOND LIFT
- C · RETURN
Pairs sit either side of the centerline so the thrust stays straight. All five are boosters with no delay or ejection charge; they vent forward at burnout, so each mount is sealed. The set stays inside the safety code limits (125 g of propellant, 1,500 g at liftoff). The pilot lights A1 + A2 from the pad and B and C in flight; that in-flight igniter circuit is still to be drawn.
05
Launch pad
Two metal sheets on a hinge. One lies flat and takes the blast; the other swings up and locks at the launch angle. A magnetic strip rail on the raised sheet lets SSR-1 ride up the pad on the field with no sliding contact; side guides keep it on the strip.

The angle stop keeps the pad within 30° of vertical. Keep the controller and the key clear of the strip: a magnet near the reed switch can arm the controller.
06
Safety key
No magnet, no launch. A 10 × 3 mm N52 magnet in a keyed fob closes a reed switch, which arms the 12 V relay. The key stays with the launch officer.
